Building Connections: The Power of Networking at Benjamin Clay's Thrive Lounge Event

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending Benjamin Clay's Thrive Lounge event at the beautiful Coombe Abbey. It was an inspiring afternoon filled with brilliant local business owners, insightful conversations, and plenty of opportunities to learn. The atmosphere was relaxed yet energizing, and yes, a glass of wine or two helped round off the week perfectly. 🍷

As someone who started their journey with a passion for cars, I was thrilled to photograph a few of the vehicles that TMS Motor Group brought along. It was a lovely bonus that reminded me why I first fell in love with photography and videography. But beyond the cars and the venue, the real highlight was the people and the connections made.

Networking has been one of the most powerful tools for growing my business and personal development over the years. It’s not just about leads or referrals; it’s about the relationships, new perspectives, and doors that open when you show up.

Why Networking Matters More Than You Think

Many business owners see networking as just a way to collect business cards or find quick leads. From my experience, it’s much deeper. Networking creates a space where ideas flow freely, and genuine relationships form. At the Thrive Lounge event, I witnessed firsthand how conversations sparked new collaborations and fresh ideas.

For example, chatting with a fellow business owner about videography led to a discussion about how video content can elevate brand storytelling. This wasn’t a sales pitch but a genuine exchange of knowledge that left both of us inspired.

Networking also challenges your perspective. Meeting people from different industries or backgrounds helps you see your own business in a new light. It encourages creativity and problem-solving by exposing you to diverse approaches.

The Venue Makes a Difference

Coombe Abbey provided the perfect backdrop for this event. The historic setting combined with the relaxed vibe made it easy to connect. When you attend events in inspiring locations, it adds to the experience and makes conversations flow more naturally.

As an event photographer, I always appreciate venues that offer great natural light and interesting spaces. Coombe Abbey’s grounds and architecture gave me plenty of opportunities to capture moments that tell a story — not just of the event but of the people and their passions.

Cars, Photography, and Personal Passion

One of the unexpected joys of the day was photographing the vehicles brought by TMS Motor Group. Cars were where my passion for photography began, so being a car photographer again felt like coming full circle.

Capturing the sleek lines and polished surfaces of these vehicles reminded me how photography and videography can bring out the beauty in everyday things. It also reinforced the importance of following your passions in business. When you combine what you love with what you do, your work becomes more meaningful and enjoyable.

The People Are the Real Highlight

At the heart of every event like this are the people. Benjamin Clay’s ability to bring together the right mix of local business owners creates a unique environment where connections thrive.

Kate Clay’s role behind the scenes is equally important. Events like this don’t happen without dedicated support, and Kate’s efforts ensure everything runs smoothly.

Networking is about showing up and being present. It’s about listening, sharing, and building trust. Over the years, I’ve found that the relationships formed at events like Thrive Lounge often lead to unexpected opportunities — collaborations, referrals, and friendships.

Takeaways for Business Owners

If you’re a business owner wondering whether networking is worth your time, here are a few practical tips from my experience:

  • Be genuine: Focus on building real relationships, not just collecting contacts.

  • Listen actively: You learn more when you listen than when you talk.

  • Follow up: After the event, reach out to people you connected with to keep the conversation going.

  • Bring your passion: Share what excites you about your business; enthusiasm is contagious.

  • Choose the right events: Look for gatherings that attract people you want to learn from or collaborate with.

Showing up consistently to events like Benjamin Clay’s Thrive Lounge can transform your business and personal growth in ways you might not expect.
